Abstract:
While millions of people have sought refuge in Europe over the last few years, most of them are facing tough times re-building their lives. As gender plays a crucial role in our daily lives, the process of displacement often has a different impact on men and women. In this lecture we present the most recent results of our research on the role gender plays in how Syrian men and women experience their lives in Belgium. Besides detailing the relevance of intersecting factors such as ethnic, religious and class background, we focus more precisely on how forced migration has differently changed men and women’s socio-economic status, their position within the family, the quality and size of their social networks and their future aspirations.
