CFP : Heterosexuality and Beyond

Publié le 13 juin par Heta Rundgren

A two-day seminar and workshop at the University of Tampere, Finland, 26–27 October 2017 ; Please send your abstract by 30 June.

The position of heterosexuality as an object of research has changed significantly due to developments in Western societies that have made its alternatives increasingly evident. In this two-day seminar aimed at doctoral students and post-doctoral scholars, we seek to explore the ways in which research can take a stand on heterosexuality as a power position in a world where it is no longer the sexual orientation determining the legitimacy of intimate relationships. Moreover, we want to address alternatives to the heterosexual organisation of social relations put forward either by lesbian, gay, and bisexual orientations or by trans identifications. We will also make space for studies of social relationships that are not limited to heterosexuality or to coupledom alone.

The seminar and its workshops provide an opportunity for participants working on gender and sexuality – and on social and intimate relations – to hone their ideas in the company of other scholars working in these fields, and to receive comments on their work from Professor Stevi Jackson, University of York, UK, and Dr Tracey Yeadon-Lee, University of Huddersfield, UK. We invite eight doctoral students and post-doctoral scholars (and also Master’s students, if space permits) to attend to the seminar. The programme will include public guest lectures by Professor Jackson and Dr Yeadon-Lee, as well as the possibility for participants to present their own 20-minute papers in a public seminar, and to discuss them further in detail in a workshop that will be open to participants only. We will explore the possibilities of publishing a selection of the presented papers as a special issue of a peer-reviewed journal.

Please send your abstract (as a Word file, in English, max. 350 words) with the title of your presentation, your name, affiliation, and contact details to tuula.juvonen@uta.fi by 30 June. We will inform the participants about the acceptance of their papers by 7 July. The papers to be presented (10–12 pages in pdf format) are due by 9 October. They will be circulated among the participants for reading two weeks prior to the seminar in order to facilitate more focused discussions during the workshop.

Attendance of the seminar is free of charge, but the participants must pay for their own travel, meals, and accommodation.
