Prostitution and Social Control in Eighteenth-Century Ports
(Abingdon: Routledge, 2015)
is now available.
This book is based on original research on provincial prostitution in Bristol and Nantes, between 1750 and 1820, compared with data from the capital cities of Amsterdam, Paris and London. It aims to define, at a street level, the relations between prostitutes, the community and the police/authorities and the economic rationale behind prostitution in a port city.
